Safety Flaps
Grades 1-3

Objectives:Example of outside of Safety Flaps

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Risk Watch safety messages.
  • Assess student understanding of safety messages presented.
Core Subject Integration
  • Health, language arts, art
MaterialsExample of inside of Safety Flaps
  • 9" x 12" construction paper
  • 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" pieces of lined paper (4 per student)
Procedure:
  1. Give each student a 9" x12" piece of construction paper.
  2. Instruct students to fold the paper in half three times to make a total of eight squares.
  3. Open the paper and cut the creases between the bottom four squares starting at the bottom and ending at the centerfold line.
  4. Distribute four pieces of lined paper (2-1/2" x 4-1/2" maximum) to each student.
  5. Have students think of four important safety messages learned through Risk Watch.
  6. Students will write a brief paragraph, poem or riddle to demonstrate their knowledge of each message.
  7. Fold the construction paper in half so the flaps are on top.
  8. Glue a message to each outside flap.
  9. Have students illustrate the safety message under the appropriate flap.
  10. Use this activity as a Risk Watch assessment tool.
