Lesson Plan: A Virtual Hunt for Electrical Home Hazards

First/Second Grade

Identify and work to eliminate electrical safety hazards in the home.

Detective

Objectives

  1. Identify safe uses of electricity.
  2. Recommend to adults corrections of electrical safety hazards in the home.

Procedure

  1. Visit the Electrical Safety Foundation International's (ESFi) Web site and identify electrical hazards www.electrical-safety.org/quiz/index.html.
  2. Proceed through the virtual home identifying the following components:
    • Bedroom
      Broken outlet
      Boy playing with outlet
      Taped electrical cords
    • Bathroom
      Electrical cord in water
      No GFCI
    • Kitchen
      Cord within baby's reach
      Appliance too close to sink
    • Living Room
      Electrical cord under rug
      Too bright bulb in lamp
      Dad pulling vacuum cord inappropriately
